Video as a mediating tool:
Connecting the design process to the real world
I wrote this thesis for my master's degree at the Mads Clausen Institute for Product Innovation, University of Southern Denmark in the spring of 2003. The user studies were conducted in Toronto, Canada and I ran a series of video-workshops at Novo Nordisk A/S in Hillerød, Denmark.
From the introduction:
This project concerns recording moments of daily life on video, and then using this video in a design process. If we consider video as a bridge between these two worlds, the real-world and the design-world, the focus of this project is on the design side; and more specifically how the real-world can inform the design process.
The flow of a designed artefact from designer to user is an everyday occurence, but there are few, if any, artefacts that flow in the reverse direction. There is an opportunity to bring the worlds of use and design closer together; so that an increased knowledge and awareness of the context of use, can inform, impact and improve the output of the design process.
The goal of this project is to inquire into how video works in this capacity of connecting the design process to the real-world.
